Aerial Yoga vs Traditional Yoga: Which One Should You Choose?

July 10, 2026

Both aerial yoga and traditional mat-based yoga share the same roots - breath awareness, mindful movement, and postural alignment. The difference lies in how each practice gets you there.

Traditional yoga, such as our Hatha and Vinyasa classes, builds strength and flexibility gradually through repetition, holding poses on a stable surface. It is ideal if you prefer a slower, meditative pace and want to deepen your understanding of classical alignment.

Aerial yoga, on the other hand, introduces a hammock that suspends part or all of your body weight. This makes certain poses - like backbends and inversions - accessible much sooner than they would be on the mat, because the fabric assists and supports you.

If your goal is spinal traction, playful cross-training, or working around a joint issue that makes floor-based inversions difficult, aerial yoga is often the better starting point. If you are preparing for advanced mat practice or teacher training, a strong traditional foundation is essential first.

The good news is you do not have to choose just one. Many of our students at Yogis Academy alternate between Hatha, Vinyasa, and Aerial Yoga through the week, using each style to support the other.
